Languages and Cultures

The Department of Languages and Cultures at Loyola University New Orleans offers degree programs in Classical Studies, French, Spanish, and Latin American Studies. These programs are designed to train students in both the target language and the culture of those countries where the language is/was spoken. Students university-wide can use their General Elective allowance to study languages from our global world including German and Italian.

Degree Programs

  • A Bachelor of Arts in Classical Studies requires a minimum of 31 hours, with some flexibility of course selection. 
  • A Bachelor of Arts in Languages and Cultures with a Concentration in French or Concentration in Spanish requires a minimum of 31 hours in the major language, 25 hours of which must be taken at the 300-400 level.
  • A Teacher Education Track in French or Spanish requires a minimum of 31 hours in the majors language, 25 hours of which must be taken at the 300-400 level. In addition, special requirements to meet standards for teaching are part of the degree. See below for more information.
  • A Bachelor of Arts in Latin American Studies requires a minimum of 31 hours, with 6 hours of Spanish at the intermediate level.

Teacher Education

Foreign Language is one of the majors identified by the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (Page 4 of Bulletin 746) for which students can seek secondary grades certification (grades 6-12). Loyola students can prepare for certification by completing the teacher degree plan in French or Spanish.

Departmental Honors

Students who have achieved junior status and have a minimum GPA of 3.5 in the major courses and a minimum GPA of 3.0 overall are eligible to request the Languages & Cultures Departmental Honors option. The research project should be approved by the supervising professor and the department chair. View requirements

Language Badges

Students who successfully complete FREN A201 or SPAN A201 at a high level, upon the recommendation of their instructor and the Chairperson of the department, will receive a special notation on their transcripts of their language proficiency accomplishment. This will show up as French Language Badge or Spanish Language Badge.
