Languages and Cultures Resources

We believe in educating the whole person through rigorous academic studies and plentiful cultural experiences. We encourage you to immerse yourself in campus life at Loyola by taking advantage of the many services we have to offer.

    All Languages and Cultures students are encouraged to join student organizations that enhance learning outside the classroom.

    • The French Honor Society, Pi Delta Phi--Open to majors, minors, or other students at the advanced level who meet the national requirements. 
    • French scholarships through CODOFIL, Council for the Development of French in Louisiana. Or Teaching Assistants through TAPIF (Teaching Assistant Program in France).
    • Les Tricolores French Club--open to all students, events throughout the year, ranging from guest lectures, concerts, film screenings to trivia contests and staged productions. 
    • La Table Française--Eat and chat in French, MWF. 
    • Spanish Group Conversation--informal conversations with native-speaker tutors, in Bobet 114 every Thursday, 12:45-1:45 p.m.
    • Mesa de Español--Informal conversations with Spanish faculty, in the Senior Commons Room, Danna Center 2nd floor, First Tuesday of the month, 1:00-1:45 p.m. 
    • The Spanish Honor Society, Sigma Delta Pi--Open to majors, minors, or other students at the advanced level who meet the national requirements. Contact Dr. Isabel Durocher.

    Department of Languages and Cultures faculty direct Honors Theses and Senior Theses written in French, Spanish, and English. The Departmental Senior Theses are an option available to our majors, especially those who plan to pursue graduate studies. Contact your academic adviser for more information.

    Our students are often able to do an internship for class credit, applying the language they have studied to a working environment. The normal internship consists of 120 hours work for 3 credit hours, usually with an accompanying journal or other written work.

    • Catholic Charities--Louise Head Start, English as a Second Language, Refugee Services (Contact Dr. Eileen Doll)

    Other past internships include area elementary and middle schools (Audubon French-American School, Metairie Park Country Day, Chalmette Middle School), or an internship abroad.

    The French Ministry of Education offers English assistant posts in French schools to graduates or undergraduates majoring in French. For more information: www.frenculture.org.
