Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry

Committed to Excellence

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Loyola University New Orleans offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Chemistry, Biochemistry and Forensic Chemistry. Our faculty and staff are dedicated to the mission of providing both an excellent curriculum and a variety of exciting undergraduate research opportunities. We equip chemistry students with the tools they need to thrive in their graduate studies and future careers, and we empower non-science majors with a solid foundation in chemistry so that they are able to make educated decisions about the world around them. We accomplish all of this through our highly capable faculty, modern facilities and instrumentation, and close-knit department.

Our program is approved by the American Chemical Society, which enables us to ensure the highest quality education and infrastructure for our students. We award an ACS-certified Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. Students can also earn bachelor degrees in Biochemistry and Forensic Chemistry. These degree plans are particularly well-suited to those in pre-health studies. Our department chair is represented on the Pre-Health Professions Committee, which supports students as they work to be accepted to a variety of programs, including medical, dental, veterinary, and pharmacy.

Chemistry Student at Loyola

Academics

It is our mission to offer excellent instruction in all areas of chemistry to help Loyola undergraduate chemistry majors, other pre-professionals, and non-science majors learn college-level chemistry by offering a comprehensive curriculum.

Chemistry Students Talking

Research

We pride ourselves on our commitment to our students and their success. To prepare our students for the ample undergraduate research opportunities available to them, students begin to learn how to use sophisticated instrumentation in their first year, so that by the end of their sophomore year they are fully capable of conducting advanced research projects.

Support Undergraduate Research

To help support our students in their research, please donate today to the Kurt R. Birdwhistell, Ph.D., Endowment for Undergraduate Research in Chemistry.

Join in Giving Back to Our Community

In keeping with our Jesuit institution, we place a strong emphasis on community involvement and outreach.

Our ACS Student Affiliate Group (a.k.a. Chem Club) and our majors’ first year seminar provide many opportunities for service. Some of our regular activities include performing scientific demonstrations at local grade schools and participating in Super Science Saturday at the Louisiana Children’s Museum here in New Orleans. The Student Affiliate Group also coordinates many social activities for the students and faculty to encourage a strong sense of community within the department.
